Things to do in Washington D.C. & Best area to Stay at?
Hotel RatesDST280 asked:
I’m Planning a trip to D.C. & I was just wondering what are some things you must do, and great attractions… I’m not into drinking and going to the clubs, so just some other fun stuff to do. Also what’s the best location to stay at, as in for a hotel that will be close to everything….

National Geographic put out a list of thing to do, places to see, hotels to stay at, restaurants to eat in, etc. I attached the URL below for that for Washington DC.
This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.

There’s so much to do in DC without having to go to a bar.
I believe all the Smithsonian Museums are still free to get into, and they’re definitely worth it. I have been to DC twice, but only for about a week total, and we didn’t get to see everything we wanted to.
Also, depending on when you go, they have professional baseball and football teams. It might be fun to catch one of those games.
You can also get a ticket for a tour bus that lets you stop at different locations to walk around and take pictures, etc. I belive the tickets are cheap…but the last time I went there, I wasn’t the one paying for it.
I hope I’ve given you some ideas as to what DC has to offer. I’m sure if you do a Google search on things to do in DC, you’ll find a lot of results.
I hope you have a fantastic time on your trip!

On my trip to Wash D.C., I stayed in Alexandria, Virginia. The hotel I stayed at had a shuttle to the Metro station so that made travel easy. I did some travel on my own and took one of those Grayline tours, too. Must sees are the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, The State Capitol Building, Vietnam Memorial, and WWII Memorial. Also interesting, The F.B.I. Building and The Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Check out the website tripadvisor.com. They have travellers who rate hotels and attractions throughout the world, including D.C. area. That will give you an even better idea on what to do and where to stay. Have fun!

There is so many things to do in DC, the hardest thing will be what to do when you get there!
I’d let your interests help guide you to what you’ll enjoy best in DC. If you like music or the performing arts, I’d recommend going to Ticketplace (right in the district, on the metro line) and getting half price tickets to a show or concert. Many venues sell tickets through Ticketplace, including Kennedy Center, and you can see great theatre and save 50% at the same time.
There are lots of museums, of course. All of the Smithsonian museums are free, and kid friendly. The Natural History museum has the dinosaurs and the great gem exhibit, American History museum has the First Ladies Gowns and Julia Child’s kitchen, and the Air & Space has all of those historic airplanes and an IMAX, too.
If you are an art lover, one museum that often gets overlooked in the National Portrait Gallery/Museum of American Art. It was closed for almost a decade and re-opened a few years ago. It is a beautiful museum and one really worthy of your time. The National Museum of Art is not a smithsonian museum but admission is also free and they have work from masters from all over the world.
I like to go to the Monuments just as the sun is setting. It is less crowded and it’s very beautiful when it’s becoming dusk. The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial is so moving at night.
Once you get to DC, I’d try to pick up the DC City Paper. It’s a weekly free publication that lists concerts and all kinds of events going on that week.
I stay in Rosslyn when I go to DC. It’s convenient, safe, and there are 3 Marriott properties and one Quality Inn that are all good properties. Rosslyn is just one metro stop from DC, so you’re very close to all of the attractions. If I can’t find a place in Rosslyn, my fallback is Crystal City. There’s a Sheridan there that has great specials and there’s also two Marriott properties in Crystal City that are nice and affordable.
Have a great time in DC -
