What are the best areas (safe) to stay in?

Los Angeles (3 nights), Houston (2 nights), Chicago (3 nights), Boston (4 nights), New York (5 nights) and Washington DC (3 nights)?

There are 5 of us. We want reasonably priced very safe accomodation which is still central enough if possible.

What areas in the different places are safe and what places should we avoid?
We will be staying in cheaper hotels or motels but THEY MUST BE SAFE! We are from Australia. Going to America in July. Thanks, please be specific about each of the places. We don’t know where to stay!

   Chicago downtown- the loop, rogers park, etc are all fine, close to Michigan ave is a good location. expect to pay about $120-140 if not more a nite.

   In LA you can stay Near the Airport at any MAJOR hotel Chain. Or you can try Century City, Or Beverly Hills, It is hard to say because Sometimes it will say LA and that could mean ANYWHERE.
