thailand hotel prices. Do you think?
Hotel Priceshawaii.d. asked:
I’ve looked online at hotel prices in thailand. Bangkok and pattaya dont seem so bad but phuket is a bit expensive. I have a thai friend here that will be going with us… do you think they’d give us a discounted price if she called and spoke to them in thai ??? I’ve read that they jack their prices up…on all the websites and even sometimes when your there in person, because “westerners” dont know how cheap it really is there. What do you think???

the hotel price for 5 stars hotels will be the same for everyone either thais or westerners. some of the local thai hotel will charge the higher price if u r westerner. if ur coming with thai people, he or she will be able to talk to some of those hotel to charge as a “thai” price. normally those local hotels in pattaya will have 2 standard prices for thai and foreigner (im only talking about 1 or 2 stars hotel) if u r with thai, u will be fine and be able to find a cheap hotel, there is a lot in pattaya. good luck and enjoy! and dont worry, everything including hotels will be cheap for ya

Phuket is the most expensive province in all of Thailand because it’s so popular with tourists. So hotels will be a bit more expensive. There are still quite a few backpacker places though around Patong that are $20 US a night - take a look at this list
It’s a good idea for your Thai friend to call ahead and see if they can get a discount, especially as it’s rainy season at the moment

Try this website:
They have a huge selection of hotels in thailand, and I’ve found them to be cheaper than most other websites, plus they have a wide range of hotels from 2 to 5 stars……
Having your thai friend talk to the hotel over the phone won’t help, by the way..
Good luck

Well, I have found no set answer to this - my wife is Thai and that does not always help - I often travel alone and sometimes, just as a walk in I will get better than internet quoted rates… I do speak Thai but I d not think that mattered in these instances [ which were not in big tourist areas ] - Hey, you are going to the tourist “hot spots” - people go there and build hotels etc to take advanyage of the situation and location - unfortunately, it becomes a bit of a game to extract maximum $$ from you - - one tactic might be to book something the first day and then walk around the first morning and compare a bit - not a great way to spend your vacation, but might be worth a couple of hrs investigation if you are not fully satisfied - - enjoy your stay

I asked similar question to my friend who is a tour guide and he said high end hotels charge the same no matter where you are from, Thailand or England. Some 4 and 3 starred hotels charge higher to Thai to repel Thais. Because they want more foreign guests (especially Caucasians) to show off “we’re Farang’s favorite international class hotel, not local” which means higher grade. Some hotels less than 2 stars are tend to charge higher to foreigners because as you mentioned Westerners don’t know how cheap it really is. So if you’re booking 4 or 3 star hotel, do it by yourself, if less than 2 stars, ask your Thai friend to phone, not online site. Enjoy your stay!

Firstly, I don’t think they are cheating on you. Nobody is stupid. Living cost in Phuket’s a little bit higher than other attractive destination in Thailand. Mostly, it’s a reasonable price on accommodation here. The higher costs, the more standard of services you will get won’t dissapointed.
In another hand, lower cost doesn’t mean poor service at all. Thai people are friendly. We do pleased to help tourists. But so sad to say that some bad people also be around (in every where in the world). Now’s low season, there are many promotions you can looking for. If you don’t expect much for best hotels/services, guest house’s also another choice for budget.
Release your bias during your trip, then you will enjoy & may have beyond the expectation. There are many things you can enjoy this beautiful island. I met many tourists & they do love this island really.
Have a wonderful trip for any choice of yours.
