Hi all, my mother (50) and I (23) will be heading to Tennessee this summer for the first time. We’re flying into Nashville and out from Memphis a week later.
I would LOVE suggestions on where to stay or things we should DEFINITELY do. I’m looking for inexpensive (read: under $80 a night) hotels/motels that are decent and hopefully have a pool. I wouldn’t mind staying outside of the city for something special or a good price.
We want to avoid anything by the airport or anything just truly unpleasant. Free parking would be great.
No real special needs at all, just looking to have a great time.
We’ll be renting a car, so driving won’t be an issue and we’re both long-haul commuters at home.
Anyway, I’d love some tips or hints or suggestions about anything or everything related to the trip. We’re really looking forward to it and it’s just hard to pick between all the places out there.
Thanks!
Ralph

The Maxwell is a really nice hotel and I do believe it is around your price range, it is pretty close to down town and they do have a pool. There is alot of nice and interesting places to eat in Nashville. Be sure to take a walk down 2nd Ave. You should try the Spaghetti Factory, thats a good place, if you like country music and dancing they have the Wild Horse Saloon also on 2nd Ave. Don’t be surprised if there is not some free music concerts on the water front.

Nashville Chamber of Commerce website will be full of “in town” ideas. Try going just north of Nashville, (Portland/Whitehouse are) for much better rates on rooms. You have to check the Corvette factory/museum in Bowling Green , Ky (about 65 miles north of Downtown Nashville). Mammoth Cave is about 30-35 miles north of there! Awesome day trip. I-24 east to Chattanooga, ( 2 hour drive, 140 miles) you visit Rock City &
Lookout Mountian. I-40 eat to Cookeville, Tn . Ex 288 go north about 35 miles to Dale Hollow Lake (110 miles from downtown Nashville). As you go to Memphis, be sure to get of I-40 west at Ex 143 (Hurricane Millls) & go north to Loretta Lynn Ranch!
In Memphis, you obviously have to go to Graceland, but also make sure you go to Beile Street & Union Ave to see Sun Records!

For your Memphis trip, you might want to look at staying just south of the city, in Southaven, MS. It’s only a few miles from the city limits and has several moderately priced hotels/motels. (In August you will definitely want a pool!!) Loads of shopping and chain restaurants, too!
Since you’ll only be here a few days, Graceland and Beale Street are two great places to visit. You could do Graceland on the way to the downtown area where you can check out the riverfront and Beale Street. If you like gambling, Tunica, MS is about 30 miles southwest of Memphis. There are quite a few casinos down there.
I hope your trip is enjoyable and safe!

It will be real hot during that time of year so pace yourselves. In Memphis I would go to Sun studio, Graceland, and Beale Street. There are lots of good barbeque restaurants in Memphis, I’m told.
In Nashville, I would go to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night, General Jackson Showboat, Opryland Hotel, (just to look around), downtown on Broadway between 5th and 2nd ave. to hear the live music, Country Music Hall of Fame, Ernest Tubb Record Shop, Midnite Jamboree, Nashville Cowboy Church. There is so much more. I would grab a Nashville Scene free newspaper and check out what musicians and singers are performing where. There are lots of places to hear music in music city. There are some Nashville websites that will help you.
