With chain petstores like that, it’s hit or miss. You may have great people working at your Petsmart, or you may have absolutely horrible people. (It’s important to always be comfortable with the people you are leaving your dog with.)
I take my dog to Petsmart doggy day camp. I absolutely love the people that are working in my Petsmart Pets Hotel area. You can tell they really love being around the animals. And they aren’t pushy like I’ve heard some people have at their local stores, for example, they know that I don’t use their training classes, but they still ask me every week how my dog did in her agility class that week and such.
I don’t think my Petsmart was so good a year or two ago though, before I ever started going there. I overheard the staff talking once, the current Pets Hotel manager started working at the store about a year ago and I think she cleaned-house and hired nearly all new people because she said that the people that were working there didn’t even really like animals. When the new PetsHotel manager came on board, she was very adamant about only hiring people who really loved taking care of the animals.

I live in Raleigh, NC and worked at a local PetsMart with a hotel but in the grooming salon. As far as staff goes, it can be hit or miss with quality people. Most of the people where I worked at were good. I will say that at least the hotel at my store was kept pretty clean (although I’d have to wash my dogs feet after camp cause they smelled like pee). However, unless you pay for extras, your dog doesn’t get much individualized attention. They do get hand walked twice a day, but it’s not much (like 5 to 10 minutes, they walk around the set of runs). Also, they don’t ever get to go outside, they have “elimination rooms” that one has an outdoor feel, but the others are just extra play areas a lot like their kennel. They don’t get to stay in there very long either, usually just a few minutes if they didn’t do their business on the “walk”.
I have also worked for a private kennel that just boarded and groomed dogs. I hope not all are like this place. It was awful, especially over the holidays. Dogs almost never got the add-ons the owners paid for and during the holidays, they’d put in a piece of plywood and have a small dog on top and a medium size dog on bottom and poo and pee would drip down on the bottom dog. You couldn’t pay me to leave my dog there, I quit after a few weeks and seeing the conditions.
The best place in my experience for boarding, is with your vet. They don’t usually have a lot of extra services available, but at least where I worked at, we took the dogs outside 3 times a day at least to go potty. Also, if dogs were being boarded for a longer time and we had a slow day, we’d let the dog run in the treatment area and play fetch and give him tons of attention. Once again though, during holidays they are busy and crowded.

The Pets Mart hotel is excellent, good runs, good food, and they walk your dog alot, they don’t just let the dog sit there without exercise, trust me they are good…..the price depends on the size of your dog…go to Pets mart.com and check the website, it has alot of info, or just call your local store to speak to someone live and get the prices, they are very picky, they make sure that all dogs that are boarded there, have had all their vaccinations.
Pets mart cares about the pets……
My brother in law is a district manager for Pets mart, and they are picky…if your dog has not its shots, they will not board the dog, …..you will need to have your vets health record of all shots and worming to board…regular kennels do not require this, why, because they do not care.
