Is it cheaper to book a hotel in New York in advance or last minute? Book 5 months in advace or one or two?

I’m planning on visiting in October and I’ve noticed that hotel prices are lower if I were to visit in July. Is it that summer is a slow time or do rates of rooms go down as the time gets closer?

Actually summer is a busy time in NYC, however Fall is the high season. Prices are their highest in October. I would tell you to wait, however prices don’t go down that month and rooms run out. If you want to travel to NYC (and October in the best month by far), then book now or you might not find a room you want to rent.
The best time to go if you are looking for a deal and decent weather is the Spring.

Its best to book a room as far out as you can. Just check each hotel’s cancellation policies. You can even book a room and keep checking to see if they have promotional rates and change the reservation.
Its always busy in NYC, so it doesnt matter when you go. It all depends on supply and demand. I tried to book a room for a friend that is going to be in town tomorrow and the cheapest rate I got was $650.00.
The fall season is really busy since the weather is still warm. October is the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. in NYC. Its a really great time to go. July is hot, but not as unbearable as August.
