Do hotel prices drop in the summer in DC and VA?
Hotel Pricesdulcechica2891 asked:
Will prices drop for hotels in DC if I go Aug 12-15 or will they remaine the same?. My family is debating about staying in DC or right on the outskirts. I know in DC especially because of taxes the rooms would be more expensive. I have been told to go on a head and book a room and the reservation can be canceled if need be. I just don’t know how long is too long to wait for booking a room.
I was told because congress is in recess and there might not be a lot of tourist in August a lot of hotel rooms might be vacant. So, some hotels might drop their prices just to fill in some of the spaces.

if i were you i would stay on the Virginia side..preferrable Pentagon City or Crystal City… they are small areas in Arlington right over the 14th street bridge.
hotel prices do not drop in the summer… that is a busy time for tourism.

I agree with your recommendations.
It is strue that congress is out in August, but tourism is up. Prices do fall, but just a tiny bit.
I disagree with posters who suggest staying in Virginia or (especially) Maryland when visiting DC. I live in VA and can tell you that commuting in can take quite a lot of time, it’s hard to go back to your room in the afternoon to drop stuff off, change, or nap, and you tend to not stay in the city in the evening, and therefore you miss a lot of the wonderful culture and nightlife that DC has to offer.
Maryland is particularly bad because the trip in by metro can take a long time, but even if you come from Arlington you are looking at 20 minutes to a half hour each way.
Your best bet is to go somewhere like kayak.com, hotels.com, priceline or whatever, and try to get an inexpensive room that way.
There are two good budget hotels in DC that I recommend heartily because they are wonderfully located, in interesting and safe areas. One is the Hotel Harrington, just off Pennsylvania Ave, near the white house, with rooms starting at $100 a night. Note that they have family size rooms as well as singles and doubles, and that they are a tourist hotel, so there will be no deals in August.
The other is the Red Roof Inn in Chinatown. This is only blocks from the Capitol, as well as a lot of Smithsoninan Museums, National Gallery of Art, and Ford’s theatre. They are a little more expensive, starting around $120 a room a night.
Both of these hotels are only 4 or so blocks from the mall, are clean, comfortable, and not fancy.

No August is still tourist season - you might get a bargain- but not because of the time of the year
