Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in London with decent prices and a central location? ?

It would also need to be family friendly, the children’s ages are 14 and 8.

“Nice”, “decent price”, and “central location” in London are almost mutually exclusive terms! London is a very expensive city in any circumstance, and the current exchange rate between the Pound and US Dollar is such that it is even more expensive than usual. However, you should check with your travel agent, since some hotels are not quite as expensive as others. I generally stay at the Melia in Regent’s Park, which is a very short cab ride away from the major historic sites, in a nice area, has a very good breakfast every morning, and is always spotlessly clean. Lots of airline crews stay at the Melia.

I really liked staying at the Premier Travel Inn at London County Hall - very central location and affordable. There isn’t a lot of ammentities but there is a park on the same property and you are right onthe Thames steps from the London eye so if the kids want to walk down and sit in the park to see what is going on then they can. There is also an aracde in the same building.
check out for reviews.

I am with the last blogger who said Premier Travel Inn. That is the largest budget hotel. Unfortunately the county hall location is one of the most prized and it is frequently booked. The front half of county hall is a very expensive Marriot.

Strand Palace is a very large hotel in Central London that is a block away from Covent Garden. It’s over a century old and the rooms are very small, but the locations is the best.

Imperial Hotels have been the budget hotels in London since the civil war, but they are in a neighborhood called Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury is a little bit of a hike, or a short tube ride. There is a huge youth hostel in Bloomsbury (like 900 beds) since it is close to where the Eurostar comes in from Paris.

The South Bank is much more attractive place to stay now. There is a Holiday Inn Express that I could recommend. There is an array of places to eat, and the National Theater on the southern bank of the river. It has become much more tourist friendly since the millenium. The pedestrian bridges across the river are all completely renovated now (including the new pedestrian only millenium bridge). The river is no longer much of an obstacle.

Thistle hotels are a chain of older hotels which are one step up from the budget hotels. However, they are in better locations and sometimes they have bargains. There is a nice one right near Trafalgar Square in the Charing Cross train station (civil war era hotel).

The business hotels like Marriot, Hilton, and sheraton are much more expensive than in the United States.

I like the millennium hotel chain - especially the milennium “gloucester” (it’s actually located 100m from the gloucester road tube station). It’s not the cheapest (eg - it’s not exactly travel inn prices!), but it is a nice hotel.
Being close to the tube station (and on the circle, district, and picadilly tube lines) means that you can get to most places in central london very quickly.
